Midcoast Conservancy Hunting Guidelines updated for 2025

Hunting season in Maine is something many people look forward to. As an organization with nearly 16,000 acres preserved, our lands and stewardship teams spend time working on properties which provide or improve access to the public for a variety of uses - birding, nature-based recreation, wildlife viewing, and hunting, fishing, and trapping. We know that people like to engage with nature in a variety of these ways, and others, and annually remind everyone to be aware in the woods.

For anyone enjoying outdoor activities in Maine's woods during hunting season—including hikers, bikers, and pet owners—wearing blaze orange is a wise precaution.

  • For humans: A hunter orange hat and vest can significantly increase your visibility to hunters.

  • For pets: Consider an orange vest or collar for your dog so they can be easily spotted.

By law, hunters must be certain of their target before shooting. However, wearing blaze orange eliminates any doubt and protects you by making you clearly visible as a human.

Please note, hunting on Sundays is prohibited in Maine and we do not allow target practice on any of our preserves.

Additional guidance around hunting, fishing, and trapping on Midcoast Conservancy lands can be found here, which has been updated for 2025. If you have any questions or need to request permission as outlined in our guidelines, please contact Tim Libby at tim@midcoastconservancy.org
