State of the Lake welcomes over 150 to annual event
Over 150 people joined us at State of the Lake, hosted in the Jewell Lodge with the gracious support of host partner Kieve-Wavus Education at their campus in Jefferson, and we were thrilled to be joined by many friends, old and new.
In its fourth year, State of the Lake offers an opportunity for the public to hear about the important work Midcoast Conservancy is doing in the Damariscotta Lake Watershed. Kathy Stevens, Midcoast Conservancy Board Member, welcomed the attendees from Jefferson, Nobleboro, Newcastle, and beyond, and provided an introduction to the recently released organizational Strategic Plan. She also provided a hearty introduction to Patricia Nease, Damariscotta Lake Watershed Manager who gave a presentation outlining our lake protection work in concentric circles of conservation. Key points included the value of Damariscotta Lake from personal and economic perspectives, the different scales of conservation for lake protection, how individuals can be directly involved in protecting Damariscotta Lake, and the importance of collaboration.
Jeremy Deeds, Aquatic Ecologist with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), then spoke about considerations for Damariscotta Lake shoreline condition, the importance of littoral (shallow water) habitat, and an introduction to lake scorecards developed by the DEP to scientifically evaluate the health of individual lakes in Maine.
Presentation slides can be viewed here.
Patricia Nease closed out the evening by presenting Pris Watson of the Damariscotta Lake Council and ardent Midcoast Conservancy supporter with the Marty Welt Volunteer of the Year award; named for Marty Welt, himself an incredible and long-standing supporter of lake work who worked for many years to help improve the health of the lake region, the award is bestowed for volunteers whose tireless efforts help further our work.
The attendees enjoyed light refreshments catered by Kieve-Wavus, with Cellardoor wines and beer from Allagash Brewing and Rising Tide Brewery.
All attendees had an opportunity to win door prizes sponsored by Dam Boat Rental, The Jefferson General Store, and The Jefferson Scoop.
We hope everyone enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with Damariscotta Lake watershed community members, and the information provided by speakers. Thank you for supporting our lake work as vital to the midcoast region!
