Zoe grew up in Vermont, where her parents ran a children’s summer camp and instilled in her a love of the outdoors and a passion for outdoor education. After working as an environmental educator for several years, Thomas found her way to Maine for graduate school, completing a masters in American and New England studies from the University of Southern Maine. She lives in Whitefield with her husband, three children, two dogs, two cats and some chickens.

Of her vision for her work at Midcoast Conservancy she says, “I love that we are able to offer high quality place-based ecology programs led by talented Maine Master Naturalists, for local 4th grade classes. The fact that each class gets to visit once a month for the entire school year is fantastic. It results in students developing a stronger appreciation for ecology in the changing seasons and a new level of comfort in the woods. My vision is to continue adding new schools to our signature 4th grade program while also offering once a year field trips for students at other grade levels. I’m also working toward building relationships with area homeschool groups and outing clubs who visit Hidden Valley Nature Center for outdoor recreation as well as ecology. I’d love to see these groups give back by adopting trails at Hidden Valley Nature Center that they take on the responsibility of clearing back and monitoring each year.

As well as offering youth programming, I’m also passionate about building community around land conservation and connecting people with nature. Our Naturalist Workshop Series, Wednesday Wanders, and full moon hikes and paddles offer adults and families opportunities to learn Maine ecology while meeting new people and connecting with our knowledgeable leaders. My vision is to have people of all ages visiting Midcoast Conservancy properties again and again because they feel connected to the land. Hopefully this connection will lead them toward supporting Midcoast Conservancy, or any other land conservation organization, throughout their lives.”
