Join Maine Master Naturalist Jill Osgood for this program on animal tracks and signs.
Learn what the feet of common animals of the Maine woods look like through examining plaster casts of animal tracks. Taking along a track card for easy identification, head out on the 1 mile trail around Kidney Pond in search of tracks and signs. Look for pine cone middens left by hungry squirrels, girdled tree tops eaten by porcupines, tree rubbings from deer antlers, and beaver trees around the pond. Search for deer trails in the snow, coyote scat, and the tracks of snowshoe hair, racoon, otter, and many other mammals.
This program will meet at the Midcoast Conservancy’s Hidden Valley Welcome Center, proceed to our nature center in the Barn, then out on the trails in search of tracks. Lets hope for fresh snow so the tracks are clear and plentiful.
This walk is perfect for anyone interested in learning more about the animals that inhabit the forests and wetlands of Hidden Valley.
